ABOUT US

Here at Australian Shepherd Homestead we strive for a healthy legacy, good temperaments, family-centered Aussies. We are located in Vicksburg, Michigan. Our journey began on Mother’s Day, years ago, when my husband bought me my very first Aussie. I instantly fell in love with our Lucy girl. We instantly fell in love with the breed. We have 3 young children- Adam Samuel, and Matthew that interact with our puppies and dogs daily.

Our dogs are part of our family and accompany us in all aspects of our lives. All of our breeding adults have genetically tested and are ASCA & AKC dual registered. All our puppies go to the vet at 2-3 days old for dew-claw removal, tails if needed, and health check. All of our pups are very well socialized, they are around our kids daily, and after a couple weeks they are introduced to our other dogs.

All our puppies are de wormed 2,4,6 and 8 weeks old. They are up to date on vaccinations before leaving. They will be micro-chipped. All dogs will receive a basket of goodies to take with them to their forever home. We include folder of vet records, birth certificate, and more. You will receive small bag of food, treats, collar, leash, toys, blanket with mom’s scent on it and more. I try to send every pup to there forever home with what it needs and more. Every pup is treated like family here at AS Homestead. I am excited you are considering AS Homestead. Our dogs are a huge part of our family and I can’t wait to share that joy with you.

BREED

“Those of us that love Aussies can’t imagine a more perfect dog.”

Breed Characteristics

Australian Shepherds- affectionately called “Aussies”- were developed to herd livestock and work as all-purpose farm and ranch dogs. While many Aussies continue to work as herding dogs, the breed has earned recognition in a variety of other roles because of their high intelligence, trainability, and eagerness to please. Australian shepherds also work as search and rescue dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy and hearing ear dogs, and drug detection dogs. They have become highly regarded for their skills in the competitive sports of obedience, agility, and flyball. And, most of all, they are beloved family companions.

Breed Temperament

Aussies are ”people” dogs that thrive on human companionship. They have an intense need to be near their owners, following them from room to room when indoors and staying close by their heels when outdoors. Because of this trait, your Aussie will be the happiest when kept in the house as a member of your family. Dogs kept in kennels or fenced yards need a significant amount of “people” time each day in order to remain emotionally healthy. Isolation from humans can quickly ruin a Aussies personality.

Australian Shepherds that have been properly socialized and trained are ideal family dogs. They are gentle guardians of small children and enthusiastic playmates for older children and adults. However, Aussies are typically reserved with strangers and can be quite protective of their family and property. Taking your dog to training classes and introducing him/her to wide variety of people and places will help him/her develop appropriate social behaviors.

Grooming

Basic Grooming tips for an Australian Shepherd

Brushing a dogs coat is the single most important key to maintaining their coat and keeping their skin healthy and comfortable. Australian shepherds are moderate to heavy shedders. By keeping the shedding coat brushed it will simulate the skin to keep it healthy-but it also helps the coat properly protect the dog from the weather. A properly brushed coat insulates the dog from both heat and cold.

Some opt to have their dogs shaved-keep in mind, that shaving down a double coat bred does not reduce the shedding, it just makes the hairs smaller.  It also might not grow back normal and it completely removes the coats ability to insulate the dog from heat or cold.

Brushing your dog can easily be done with a good slicker brush and long tooth undercoat rake which I will link a couple below.

Use the brush in the direction of your dog’s coat. Gently use the undercoat rake next to brush the hair down to the skin- to check for any resistance,. Where you find resistance with undercoat rake, work those areas further with the brush.

Find a groomer that is confident and knowledgeable on the breed. Professionally groomed Australian shepherds should be able to be maintained with you brushing in between to go every 8 weeks.
